Why You Should Go to the Doctor After a Car Accident

| Jan 20, 2020 | Motor Vehicle Accidents

If you’re ever in a car accident, you should go to the doctor. It doesn’t matter if it was a minor fender-bender or a serious crash that totaled the car; you need to see a doctor. The sooner you get a medical examination, the more likely you are to treat injuries and get the compensation you deserve.

Treat Yourself

Going to the doctor immediately after a crash gives you the best chance of identifying and treating unseen injuries as early as possible. Car accidents usually cause internal damage, meaning the signs may not be obvious right away.

A stomach bruise appearing the day after an accident could mean organ damage next week. Likewise, even a slow rear-ending could result in pinched nerves and whiplash.

A full examination immediately after an accident can treat these injuries before they become debilitating and can save a lot of grief in the long-run.

Creating a Record

Going to the doctor also creates a paper trail. This tells the insurance company that your injuries were severe enough to warrant immediate medical attention. The more evidence you have demonstrating your injuries, the more likely you are to get a just settlement.

Even if you don’t feel pain, going to the doctor demonstrates you were proactive in your treatment. If you don’t go to the doctor and develop internal bleeding in the weeks following an accident, the insurance company might argue that the crash didn’t cause the injury.

You should make an effort to get to the doctor within 24 hours of a car accident. Even if you have to take time off work, you should see a doctor and then contact an experienced personal injury attorney.
